Case study · Shared platform

Kennel Manager: software for UK animal rescues.

A shared management platform we designed and built for rescues, shelters, sanctuaries and fosters-only networks. Dogs, cats and every other species, with each organisation working at its own web address.

The problem

Rescues do vital work on tight budgets, and the software available to them often works against them. Fees charged per adoption jump in kitten season, a whole litter can't be taken in at once, and foster and volunteer scheduling is an afterthought.

Add dated screens, little help with data protection duties and no support for Gift Aid, and many rescues fall back on paper and spreadsheets.

The approach

  • One shared platform, so the cost is spread across many rescues
  • Predictable monthly pricing in pounds, not a fee per adoption
  • Each rescue's records kept apart in the database itself
  • Designed around UK rehoming, including home checks and Gift Aid
  • Easy to join, and easy to leave with all your data

The solution

Every animal, kennel and dose of medicine in one place, on any device. Each rescue gets its own public address for its adoptable animals, while staff sign in separately with two-step security.

Adopters, fosterers, volunteers and donors are never charged for, and care features and a full data export are included on every plan.

What it does today

Animal records

Intake and outcomes for any species, whole litters at once, and a warning if a microchip is already on file.

Kennels & locations

A kennel map, a history of every move, and printable kennel cards with QR codes.

Medication & vaccinations

Courses entered once, the way the vet wrote them, then every dose listed and due.

No double doses

Whoever is giving a dose claims it first, so two people can never give the same tablet.

Public listings

Adoptable animals on the rescue's own page, and on its existing website too.

Photos & files

Every upload checked for viruses, with hidden location details removed.

Roles & sites

Staff roles each rescue can edit, assigned per site, with invitations by email.

Secure & portable

Two-step sign-in, a full audit log, and a complete export of your data at any time.

Any species

Dogs, cats, rabbits and every other animal a rescue takes in.

Your own address

Each rescue works at its own name on kennelmanager.uk.

Data kept apart

Each rescue's records separated in the database, and tested on every change.

Free to leave

Download everything, photos included, whenever you like.

Growing with the rescues that use it

Kennel Manager is being built in stages, with each part finished properly before the next begins. On the way are:

  • Adoption applications, home checks, references and contracts
  • Fosterers and volunteers
  • Donations, adoption fees and Gift Aid claims
  • Text messages, address lookup and spreadsheet imports
  • Reports for managers and trustees

Shared or bespoke

Two ways to get the same foundations

A shared platform keeps costs down because everyone uses the same system. When an organisation needs something that works entirely its own way, we can build it a bespoke system on the same proven foundations.

That's what we did for Carla Lane Animals in Need and Moss Cottage Retreat: a totally bespoke system covering their sanctuary and boarding kennels, built on the foundations of Kennel Manager.
