Viruses and other malware don't always announce themselves. Some are designed to sit quietly, stealing passwords or using your computer to send spam. These are the signs to watch for.
Common warning signs
- Your computer has suddenly become much slower, or the fan is running constantly
- Pop-ups appear even when your browser is closed
- Your browser's home page or search engine has changed by itself, or searches redirect to strange sites
- New toolbars, extensions or programs you don't remember installing
- Your antivirus has been switched off and won't turn back on
- Friends receive emails or messages from you that you didn't send
- Files that won't open, have strange names, or a message demanding payment to unlock them (ransomware)
Beware fake virus warnings
A web page that suddenly fills your screen, claims your computer is infected and tells you to call a number is itself the scam. Never call the number or let anyone connect to your computer. Close the browser (use Ctrl + Shift + Esc if it won't close) and call someone you trust.
What to do
- Stop using the computer for online banking or shopping.
- If you suspect ransomware, disconnect from the internet straight away.
- From a different device, change the passwords for your email and bank.
- Get the computer checked properly.
