Laptop batteries wear out gradually with use, but how you treat them makes a big difference to how long they last.
Everyday habits
- Avoid heat. Heat is a battery's worst enemy. Don't use your laptop on a duvet or cushion that blocks the vents, or leave it in a hot car.
- Don't drain it to zero regularly. Modern batteries are happiest kept roughly between 20% and 80%.
- Use the battery-saving settings. Many laptops have an option to stop charging at around 80% if you're mostly plugged in at a desk. Check your manufacturer's app.
- Use the right charger. Cheap, unbranded chargers can damage batteries and charging ports.
- Storing it for a while? Leave it at around half charge, not full or empty.
Signs it's time for a new battery
- It only lasts a fraction of the time it used to
- The laptop shuts down suddenly at 20 or 30 percent
- It only works when plugged in
- The case is bulging, the trackpad is lifting, or the lid won't close flat. Stop using it and get it looked at straight away, as a swollen battery can be dangerous.
Charging problems?
If your laptop won't charge, or only charges when the cable is held at an angle, the problem is often a worn DC charging socket rather than the battery. We repair and replace these in our workshop. See our computer and Mac repair services.
